Turn a Flat Pack Kitchen into a Professionally Painted Kitchen
Whether you’re building a new home, or you’re renovating an existing one; the kitchen, bathroom and laundry are often the biggest expense and decision you will have to make.
If you have decided you want to start your kitchen from scratch, flat packed cabinets are an inexpensive, easy way to do it yourself. Major home improvement stores such as Bunnings, Masters and Ikea all offer a range of flat pack cabinets designed to suit almost any kitchen, laundry or bathroom space.
Flat pack cabinets are often easily recognisable due to the limited colour options and simple design. If you have decided that flat pack cabinets are what you want to install, consider getting the cabinets painted before installation to add value and style to your home.
What are the benefits of painting flat pack cabinets?
So you have decided on flat pack cabinets for your home, why should you paint them?
- Flat pack cabinets are easier to paint than an old peeling vinyl or timber cabinets as they are a smooth, untouched surface.
- Not only do you save time removing cabinet doors, but you will also save money on the painting of the cabinets. The polisher will not need to spend any time removing the peeling vinyl or preparing the timber to be painted, so that means they have more time to get straight to painting your cabinets!
- It adds value to your home! A normal flat pack kitchen, bathroom or laundry can be pretty stock standard. By painting your new cabinets, you will have a fully painted kitchen, bathroom or laundry at a fraction of the cost.
Should I be looking out for anything in particular when choosing flat pack cabinets?
Almost any surface can be painted on, so there isn’t much to worry about when choosing flat pack cabinets to be painted. The easiest cabinets to be painted are Melamine because nothing needs to be removed before painting (unlike Vinyl wrapped doors).
What do I do once I have chosen my flat pack cabinets?
Once you have decided on the flat pack cabinets that work best for your home, all you need to do is bring them to a polish shop of your choice. Once the cabinets are at the polish shop, they will be able to be painted and back to you ready to be installed!
When looking for a polish shop to paint your new cabinets it is important to find one that is professional, reliable and clean. Check out our past article on 5 Top Tips to Picking a Polish Shop for more information on what to look out for when choosing where to take your new cabinets.

My husband and I are trying to do a few upgrades to our home and we are stuck on the kitchen. We really want to upgrade our cabinets, but all of the shops that we talked to have been so expensive. I have heard about these kitchen flat packs, and they seem like a really great idea. I really liked how you added some things that I should be looking for. I will be sure to try and find a pack that is made of painted melamine. Thank you for the advice.
