A painted kitchen adds style and value to your home. Whether you’re building your kitchen from new or replacing the design of your old kitchen a cabinet maker is probably your first phone call. When you have decided on a kitchen design, the next question you will receive from your cabinet maker is what finish you would like. Timber, melamine, laminate or a painted finish are the most typical cabinet finishes that you can chose.

When choosing painted cabinets, most cabinet makers will outsource the painting of the cabinets to a professional polish shop. Though this is work the cabinet makers can do themselves, it is usually better for not only the cabinet maker, but also the client to have the work done by a professional polish shop.

If you’re having your kitchen, bathroom or laundry cabinets painted, here are some of the key questions you should ask your cabinet maker to ensure you’re getting the highest quality painted cabinets possible.

Question #1 – Do you use a professional polish shop to paint your cabinets, or do you paint them yourselves?

Though there is no issue with a cabinet maker painting their own cabinets, a professional polish shop is specifically designed to carry out high volumes of cabinets in a short period of time. This means your job will be done professionally and quickly.

Question #2 – What polish shop do you use to paint your cabinets? Can I recommend a polish shop?

It is extremely important to find out what polish shop your cabinet maker uses to paint their cabinets so you can do your own research on their work. If you’re not happy with the polish shop they use, you can also request they use a polish shop of your choice, such as Dianella Polishing.

Question #3 – Does the polish shop have a showroom? Can I go see their warehouse?

Whether it’s your bathroom, laundry or kitchen that you are getting made it is going to be a decision you’re going to have to live with for a long time, not to mention a decision that is probably going to cost a lot of money. Ask your cabinet maker if the polish shop they want to use has a showroom where you can go view their work. Any reputable polish shop will have a showroom and a warehouse where you should be able to see samples of their work to give you the peace of mind about your cabinets.

Question #4 – Does the polish shop have a website?

It might seem like a simple question, but asking to see a polish shops website is the first step in researching the type of cabinets you are going to be left with. A professional polish shop will have a professional website that includes samples of their work, information about two-pac painting and a good question and answer section that answers any questions you might have.

I’m really interested in refurbishing my kitchen cabinets but first which are generally in good repair but what about my kitchen bench tops? My kitchen is solid wood (tops as well) I’ve had advice about putting granite on top but the company concerned would not consider this (because of the solid wood tops) and to remove the tops and replace with a new ones they could not guarantee not damaging the cabinets! Can you suggest alternative idea? Could they be covered as they are eg vinyl, stainless steel(?) and th cabinet doors renovated?

      Hi Anne,

Thank you for your comment and question regarding your kitchen renovation. Unfortunately, bench tops aren’t something we specialise in, so we a little short on suggestions. Maybe try Googling “bench top resurfacing” in your area. If there isn’t a company who is able to help you with a new granite finish there may be other stone which is easier to use.

In regards to damaging the cabinets underneath, check what type of damage they are suggesting. If it is the possibility of scratching the wood etc, this could be easily fixed by getting the cabinets refinished with 2-pac paint (such as the service Dianella Polishing provides) after the bench tops have been finished. Superficial damage can easily be fixed through the Dianella Polishing process. However, if the damage is going to be further than that, then of course it will be worth looking at other options.

Sorry we couldn’t be much more help!

      Thanks,
      The Team @ Dianella Polishing

  3. I like how you mentioned a reputable shop will have a showroom, where you can look at the different cabinet options they have. My husband and I are remodeling our kitchen and are needing to find cabinets. Knowing they’re coming from a reliable company will make us more comfortable, and reassure us, that they will last a long time.
